How to Make Your Own Aura Spray (and Why Your Energy Field Matters)

Make your own aura spray – That subtle shimmer, the invisible cloak of energy we call our aura, is a dynamic and intricate field that extends beyond the physical body. It’s not a static entity but rather a constantly fluctuating tapestry woven from our thoughts, feelings, experiences, and even our interactions with others. Think of it as an energetic fingerprint, unique to each individual, reflecting their current state of being and their overall vibrational frequency.

Within this auric field, emotions take shape and form even before they register consciously in our minds. These nascent feelings, like subtle shifts in the energetic current, can linger and influence our mood and behaviour. Similarly, the energetic imprints of others, whether positive or negative, can attach themselves to our aura, potentially affecting our own energy levels and emotional equilibrium. This highlights the importance of energetic boundaries and practices for auric cleansing and protection.

Furthermore, the aura serves as a conduit for our intuition. The subtle whispers of inner guidance, often drowned out by the noise of our conscious thoughts, resonate within this energetic space. Learning to sense and interpret the nuances of our aura can open us to a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us. It’s a realm where we can receive intuitive nudges, gain insights, and connect with a wisdom that transcends logic and reason. Developing awareness of our aura is a journey of self-discovery, a process of learning to listen to the subtle language of our energetic being and harnessing its potential for well-being and intuitive awareness.

Lately, I've been feeling the need to create softer rituals.

Ones that don’t demand more energy than I have to give, but still offer deep support. Using an aura spray have become one of my favourite tools for this. They’re gentle, powerful, and feel like a blessing in a bottle.

Let’s begin with a deeper understanding of the aura and why it’s worth protecting—and then I’ll guide you through creating your own aura spray, infused with intention and love.

What is the Aura?

Your aura is your energetic atmosphere, the field of light that expands from your physical body and interacts with the world around you. Some see it as colours, others feel it as vibration. Either way, it’s a living, breathing part of you, constantly shifting in response to your thoughts, emotions, environment, and the people you encounter.

Excerpt from my book, Your Body Is Listening.

‘Our energetic field is bigger than just our physical being. It has no edges, it just becomes more ‘diluted’ as it moves further away from the centre of our bodies, until it blends seamlessly into those around us.

Think of it this way…

We are all just one big energy field that becomes concentrated in different areas to form a ‘separate’ person. ‘Separate’ however, is an inaccurate term, as we are all part of this giant energetic field with only the illusion of separation.’

When your aura you energetic concentrate is clear and strong, you feel more grounded, focused, and connected to your inner knowing. But when it becomes cluttered or porous, you might notice:

  • Feeling drained after being around certain people
  • Sudden mood changes that don’t feel like your own
  • Anxiety or fogginess
  • A sense of being “off” but not knowing why

This is why protecting and cleansing your aura is so important—it’s energetic hygiene, just as essential as washing your hands or brushing your teeth.

Why You Should Protect Your Aura?

Our inherent sensitivity, often masked by learned behaviours, is a fundamental aspect of our being. The aura, far from being a solid barrier, is inherently permeable, serving as a conduit for feeling, sensing, and establishing connections with the world around us.

This porous nature, while helping our interactions and understanding, also renders us vulnerable. Without deliberate attention and mindful practices, our auras can unknowingly absorb external energies, emotions, and influences, much like a sponge readily soaks up liquid.

This absorption can lead to feelings of overwhelm, fatigue, and a diminished sense of personal vitality as we unknowingly carry energies that are not our own. Cultivating awareness of our auric boundaries and implementing protective measures becomes essential for maintaining our energetic well-being and navigating the constant influx of external stimuli.

Protecting your aura isn’t about closing yourself off… It’s about creating healthy energetic boundaries so you can move through the world without absorbing what’s not yours to carry.

Other Beautiful Ways to Protect Your Energy

  1. Even before we get to the spray, it’s good to know that there are many ways to nurture your aura. Some of my favourites:
  2. Salt baths: Sea salt or Epsom salt helps draw out stagnant energy. Add rose petals or herbs for an extra blessing.
  3. Visualisation: Imagine yourself surrounded by a golden or violet light. This can be done in the morning or before bed.
  4. Sound: Singing bowls, chimes, or even humming to yourself can recalibrate your field.
  5. Nature: Trees and wind are some of the best aura cleansers. Let the wind take what’s not yours.
  6. Affirmation with intention (not repetition): Gently affirm what you know, not what you’re trying to force.

🌿 The Healing Power of Essential Oils for Your Aura

When making an aura spray, it is beneficial to concentrate on using grade A essential oils. Be careful when choosing essential oils—many products on the market are labelled as “fragrant” but are made with synthetic ingredients that carry no energetic or therapeutic benefits. Always opt for pure, high-quality essential oils from trusted sources to ensure you’re working with nature’s true essence. Real essential oils are so much more than just scent — they are the distilled life-force of plants. In every drop lives sunlight, earth, memory, and medicine. When we work with them intuitively, they become allies for both the seen and unseen parts of us.

Sprays with this life force move through air, just as energy does. They don’t need to be rubbed into skin — they can touch you through breath, vibration, and presence. When misted into your field, they shift things. Not with force, but with deep remembering. An aura spray can help you return to your centre.

Each oil carries its own energetic quality:

  • Lavender calms frayed edges and helps soften anxiety.
  • Rosemary is a beautiful clarifier, great for foggy minds and scattered thoughts.
  • Frankincense anchors your energy, reconnects you to spirit, and supports deep focus, which brings us to something even more fascinating.

Frankincense and Focus: A Natural Ally for ADHD

  • Properties: Grounding, calming, and protective. It’s often used to clear negative energies and create a strong spiritual boundary.
  • Why it’s protective: Frankincense is known to elevate one’s energy while creating a shield around you, guarding against psychic or emotional draining. It can help you stay connected to your higher self while repelling negativity.

Boswellia carterii, as it is botanically known, has been used in spiritual rituals for centuries, and now science is beginning to understand why. Beyond its grounding and heart-opening properties, frankincense may also help support those with ADHD.

In a small but remarkable study by Dr. Terry S. Friedmann, children diagnosed with ADHD used essential oils — including frankincense — three times daily for 30 days. The results showed an improvement in brain wave activity and behaviour, particularly in focus and mood regulation. (study paper here)

This makes frankincense a beautiful inclusion in aura sprays created for mental clarity, focus, and emotional regulation — not just for children, but for anyone navigating a world that often feels overwhelming.

It’s a sacred reminder:
Healing doesn’t always need to be loud. Sometimes it’s a quiet mist in the air. A breath. A plant’s whisper. And sometimes, that’s enough to bring you home to yourself.

Incorporating Essential Oils into Daily Life

To harness the benefits of essential oils:

  • Aromatic Use: Diffuse oils like frankincense in your living space to create a calming environment.
  • Topical Application: Dilute essential oils with a carrier oil and apply to pulse points for sustained effects.
  • Personalised Blends: Create custom blends tailored to your specific needs, such as focus, relaxation, or energy.

Caution and Consideration

Essential oils offer wellness benefits but require knowledgeable and cautious use due to their potency.

Prioritise Quality and Purity: Choose reputable suppliers with rigorous testing (e.g., GC/MS reports) and look for “100% pure” or “certified organic” labels, noting the botanical name and considering plant origin and extraction methods. Low-quality oils can be ineffective and cause adverse reactions.

Dilution is Necessary: Always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil (like jojoba or coconut oil) before topical application to prevent skin irritation and sensitization. Neat application is risky. Recommended adult dilution is 1-3%; lower for children, elderly, and sensitive skin. Start with lower concentrations.

Seek Professional Guidance: Essential oils are not a replacement for medical care. Consult a healthcare professional or certified aromatherapist if you have health conditions, are pregnant/breastfeeding, are giving oils to infants/children, or are taking medications, as interactions and contraindications may exist. They can provide personalised, safe usage advice.

How to Make Your Own Aura Spray

You’ll need:

    • A small glass spray bottle (amber or cobalt blue is ideal to protect the contents)
    • Distilled or spring water
    • Alcohol, preferably vodka (as a preservative)
    • Essential oils of your choice (see ideas below)
    • Optional: crystals, dried herbs, or a handwritten blessing.

Lavender: Lavender is like a soft hug for the soul. Its calming, floral aroma helps to quiet the mind, reduce anxiety, and create a peaceful atmosphere. Whether you diffuse it or apply it topically, lavender encourages a serene environment, allowing you to release stress and enjoy deeper, more restful sleep. It’s the perfect companion when you’re seeking emotional balance and a little moment of calm in your day.

Frankincense: a sacred scent that has been cherished for centuries for its ability to connect us to something higher. This warm, resinous oil is grounding and protective, creating a safe space for deep spiritual work or meditation. It helps to clear the air, both energetically and emotionally, and brings a sense of inner peace. It’s also said to support overall well-being, making it an essential part of any healing practice.

Rose: The essence of unconditional love. Its sweet, floral fragrance is deeply nurturing, opening the heart chakra and inviting in self-love, compassion, and forgiveness. Rose helps to soften emotional wounds and reminds you to embrace your true, beautiful self. The uplifting aroma encourages balance and peace, making it perfect for cultivating deeper emotional harmony.

Lemongrass: Lemongrass is a burst of energy for your space. With its bright, citrusy scent, it clears away stagnant, heavy energy and uplifts the spirit. It’s invigorating, helping to promote mental clarity and focus while dispelling negativity. Whether you’re looking to refresh your environment or shift your energy, lemongrass brings a sense of renewal and vitality.

Cedarwood: With a deep, earthy aroma that feels like a grounding force beneath your feet. It creates a sense of stability, strength, and security, helping you feel rooted in your energy. This oil is perfect for setting boundaries and promoting relaxation, helping you to find calm in moments of stress. It supports your emotional well-being by encouraging feelings of protection and inner peace.

🌸 Aura Spray Ritual Guide

You don’t need to do anything complicated — just be present. Here’s a soft little ritual you can follow anytime:

  1. Pause.
Find a quiet space. Take three slow, conscious breaths. Invite your energy back to you.

  2. Shake & Mist.
Gently shake your bottle. Close your eyes. Spray above your head and let the mist fall around your shoulders and heart.

  3. Set the Intention.
    Whisper to yourself:
“I call all of my energy home. I release what does not belong to me.”

  4. Feel.
Stand for a moment and simply feel. Let the plants do their work. Let your body speak. You may feel lighter, clearer, more yourself, or just… softer.

Repeat as needed throughout your day, especially after interactions, before bed, or first thing in the morning.

💫 Final Thoughts

The more sensitive we become, the more we’re invited to tend to our own energy like a sacred garden. There’s no need to push or over-practice. Protection can be gentle. It can be as simple as a breath, a boundary, or a misting of rose and cedarwood under morning sunlight.

Let your aura spray be a quiet reminder that your energy is precious, and it’s safe to care for it.
