How to do Sitali Pranayama (Cooling Breath)
Sitali is a breathing technique that cools the body, adds moisture to the system and soothes a Pitta imbalance. You simply curl the sides of your tongue and breathe in through your mouth. Sitali, a mindful breathing technique rooted in ancient yoga traditions, offers a multitude of benefits for both physical and mental well-being. It is particularly effective in cooling the body down, adding moisture to the respiratory system, and alleviating imbalances associated with the Pitta dosha, one of the three fundamental energies in Ayurvedic medicine.
The practice of Sitali involves curling the sides of the tongue into a tube-like shape, resembling a straw. With the tongue positioned in this manner, the practitioner inhales slowly and deeply through the mouth, allowing the cool air to flow over the tongue and into the lungs. This unique breathing technique creates a cooling sensation that permeates the entire body, providing instant relief from heat and discomfort.
In addition to its cooling effects, Sitali also helps to hydrate the respiratory tract. As the air passes over the tongue, it picks up moisture from the saliva and carries it into the lungs. This moisture helps to soothe dry throats, reduce inflammation, and improve overall respiratory function.
Furthermore, Sitali is known to balance Pitta imbalances. Pitta, characterized by the elements of fire and water, is associated with heat, metabolism, and transformation.
We love it when the sun finally makes an appearance. However, when your dosha is Pitta and the heat turns up you may notice some imbalances too. It’s good to be aware of these so you can do something about it.
What is a dosha?
Ayurveda recognises five elements: air, water, earth, wind and fire. We experience these five elements in the environment around us and they are also reflected in our internal climate. These five elements make up the different doshas (or types).
The 3 different Doshas are Pitta, Vata and Kapha.
We are all a mix between the doshas, but usually, one dosha is predominantly present in our system.
When Pitta is in balance, individuals tend to feel energized, focused, and clear-minded. However, excessive Pitta can lead to symptoms such as irritability, anger, skin rashes, and digestive issues.
By practising Sitali regularly, individuals can help to alleviate these symptoms and promote a sense of inner peace and tranquillity. The cooling and hydrating effects of Sitali help to pacify the fiery nature of Pitta, reducing inflammation and restoring harmony to the body and mind.
