Latissimus dorsi activation (protecting the shoulders)
The Latissimus dorsi muscles, also known as Lats, are two triangle-shaped muscles situated below the shoulder blades. They extend out to the arms and run down the spine to the pelvis. These muscles are activated when you move your shoulder blades down and together. Without this movement, the exercise will only work your arms, neck, and trapezius, which is the muscle that extends from the base of your neck across your shoulders to the middle of your back.
Although it may not seem like a big deal, each muscle has a specific task to perform. If they are not used for their intended purpose, other muscles will have to take over, causing overactive muscles to become fatigued and sore.
This can affect your posture, your range of motion, your flexibility and your overall strength and performance. This video will help you to identify where these muscles are and what they will feel like when activated.
